The breakthrough in 1981 later set the stage for cancer research using mice as transgenic lab tools. Different types of cancer cells would be injected into the mouse embryo and studied. This also relates to the application of transgenic animals, and how they help humans.
1891- the first successful embryonic transfer was completed by Walter Heape in Angora rabbits
1940s- reports of successful in vitro manipulation using a culture system
1963- a reliable system to culture eggs is created at the University of Pennsylvania by Ralph Brinster
1966- a technique is proposed to micro-inject fertilized mouse eggs (ensuring accurate insertion of foreign DNA)
1974- first genetic modification of animals is reported by Rudolph Jaenisch
1981- reports of successful implantation of foreign DNA in mice
