A transgenic animal occurs when foreign DNA
is microinjected into the pronuclei (nucleus of a gamete) of a previously fertilized egg. The egg is then implanted into the oviduct between the ovary and the uterus of a surrogate mother. The mother then gives birth to a genetically modified offspring, producing a transgenic animal. The offspring is then bred with other similarly genetically modified animals, creating a transgenic line. |
